MCM Training Update "The People's Marathon"

Category: Family

http://www.nanascapobeachquilting.com/blog/upload/16%20mile%20run%208-05-07%20001.jpg

August 5, 2007. This was week 12 in our Marathon training. Tess and I were just finishing mile 16 when Bob caught a photo of us. It proved to be a pretty tough run; after I got my shoes off I noticed that I had blood blisters under both my big toenails!! I learned the hard way that you should always keep your toenails trimmed short! After a few painful days and a visit to the doctor, which was followed by 10 days on antibiotics I began the healing process.

August 11, 2007: week 13 a short 6 miler. I managed to run this one alone. I taped down my injured toenails and began my run. I know that I must have been running a little different…slowly and carefully, due to my messed up toenails! This run took way too long for 6 miles, but nonetheless, I FINSIHED!!

August 18, 2007: week 14, 18 miles. Wow, I can’t even begin to say how proud I am of my self for actually finishing 18 miles. I ran alone again and it was really tough. I started at 5:30 am and it took me 5 long grueling hours to finish. The weather had turned really hot and humid here, and I got really dehydrated. I had trouble with my toenails hurting and at times I thought that I was going to faint on the side of the road. The last few miles were pretty painful and at that time I couldn’t imagine what 26.2 miles would feel like. Bob called me a few times during those last few miles and tried to keep my spirits up, he even brought me some fresh cold water, since I had long run out. Bob and Rita started their run shortly after me that morning and finished with much better results. They are averaging 10-minute miles or better. They finished 18 miles at about 3 hours 40 minutes. We are all dedicated to running this Marathon in Rick’s honor no matter how fast or how slow, and I know he would be so proud if he were still here to see this!

I miss him and I always will. We love you Rick!!

Norma

P.S. my toenails are much, much better now, one has fallen off completely and the other is not far behind. I can once again run pain free!
